"Sustainable design defines luxury. Luxury is beautiful now, will be for a generation while not compromising the needs of that next generation. There are many opportunities to accomplish this in the modern bathroom from fixtures to appliances. Water saving fixtures to consider include low flow fixtures, touch-free faucets, and dual flush toilets. Energy and water saving appliances that should be considered are super-insulated tank water heaters, tankless water heaters, solar water heaters, and grey water units. All of these are here-and-now technologies that accomplish their intent while saving resources and money from day one."

"Luxury now comes with a price: social consciousness. I call it 'Conscious Luxury.' Do you know that a large, luxury home can consume over 300,000 gallons of water a MONTH? Save thousands of gallons of water by switching to WaterSense-labeled high-efficiency toilets and faucets that use less water without the feeling of 'getting less'. Running hot water to bring it up to temperature is wasteful. Tankless water heaters can often be installed closer to the point of use, eliminating the need for storing water and keeping it warm. An alternative to going tankless is to replace your old water heater with a clean burning, efficient tank water heater that saves not only money, but is kinder to the environment.
Think about where the products for your new bathroom comes from: buying a slab of marble that's imported from Brazil, India or China has consequences: the amount of fuel that's consumed to get it to its final destination. Finally, air quality is overlooked at lot when thinking 'green'. Good ventilation in a bathroom or kitchen isn't only a comfort issue, it's a health issue."

"Yesterday's concept of luxury was indulgence in extravagance. Today luxury is redefined as comfort - combined with enduringly beautiful style. How can luxury bathrooms conform more to the recycling patterns of nature than to habits of extravagance
Indulge, instead, in appreciating energy resources: flip a switch to color-corrected fluorescent lights; store toiletries in stylish bamboo cabinetry; dress your private spa with recycled glass tile and Vetrazzo countertops... Bathe in rain water collected by cistern systems, heat it sustainably with Rheem tankless water heaters or solar water heaters. Then recycle it with the a greywater pump system and irrigate your garden. Align luxury love with planet love!"

My clients were looking for a spa experience in their master bathroom that provided proper hot water supply, high efficiency, low operating costs, and low impact on the environment.
The goal was accomplished by using a natural gas high efficiency storage water heater with a direct vent system.
The model selected has a high Energy Factor (EF) with a First Hour Rating (FHR) to accommodate their two shower heads, two hand held heads, high volume tub and two basins.
We determined the right size of tank needed for the project by calculating the consumption of water in a busy hour and making sure its FHR was larger than the demand by a few gallons.
Use of the proper hot water heater, coupled with high-efficiency plumbing fixtures, and a thermostat with a vacation mode setting, succeeds in creating a spa environment while promoting energy efficiency and water conservation.
